The Star Trek: The Next Generation 4-Movie Collection Completes the Star Trek 4K Upgrade in Style

The four Star Trek: The Next Generation films are finally upgraded to 4K in a set that is a must have for fans of the series.

When the original series Star Trek films were released in 4K last year, the 4 Next Generation films were conspicuous by their absence. Considering 10-film collections of the Star Trek films already exist, it seemed strange that only the original series films would receive the upgrade to 4K.

As it turns out, fans were worried for naught, as Paramount was just waiting to release the four Star Trek: The Next Generation films in their own box set that officially releases tomorrow. As with the Original Series set, each film is available in 4K and blu-ray. The inner casing is a little flimsy as it’s one of those sets that’s designed to hold all the discs together in the smallest space possible. This is somewhat compensated for by the gorgeous cover art that covers both the case and the slipcover for the set. Star Trek box art has been hit or miss over the years, but this set looks great, with a style that’s artsy without looking stupid.

Then there’s the special features that accompany each film. Paramount knocked it out of the park with this part. This set contains all of the special features that have previously been released for each film, along with new features specially made for this release. This includes a special four-part series (one part per film) that tracks Brent Spiner’s journey playing the android Data. For Star Trek fans that love the behind the scenes special features of Star Trek films, this part alone makes the set a must-have.

Of course, there’s also the beautiful quality of the upgraded films themselves to consider. While the Next Generation films aren’t nearly as old as the Original Series films (they range from 1994-2002), they still benefit from a 4K upgrade in ways I didn’t expect. The picture pops with details I’d glossed over in the past, though it could be argued that this doesn’t help Star Trek: Generations much (but I digress). Given how great these films look in 4K, this is definitely the definitive collection of Next Generation films.

To conclude, this set is a must have for any fans of the Star Trek: The Next Generation films. The films look great, the special features are comprehensive, this is a set you don’t want to miss out on.
