Duke Nukem Getting the Big Screen Treatment

The creators behind Cobra Kai are looking to give another cheesy classic a fresh start, with a Duke Nukem movie in development!

I guess we’re all out of bubble-gum, as the iconic, ultra-90s, video game bro Duke Nukem is coming to the big screen. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who says Legendary Entertainment have snagged the rights to the character/game from Gearbox.

More, they’ve picked up Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, the creators behind Cobra Kai to produce the project. No writer is attached yet, though apparently the search is underway for one, so consider this development EARLY.

I’m curious to see how this one comes together. There’s plenty of nostalgia attached to Duke Nukem still (even after the disastrous last game), but it’s a character/story that…uhhhh…well, has a number of problematic elements. Adapting him isn’t going to be the easiest thing and it’s not like movies based on FPS titles have the best track record.

Either way, I’m interested, if only because it might signal Gearbox is ready to give us a new Duke Nukem game.
