Idris Elba is a Genie in First Trailer for Three Thousand Years of Longing

Today brings the first trailer for George Miller’s (Mad Max: Fury Road) next film, Three Thousand Years of Longing, and it looks all kinds of crazy.

George Miller directing a fantasy genre film is enough to pretty much guarantee my butt is in the seat at theaters. I didn’t need a trailer, but that doesn’t mean I won’t take one!

This trailer is a bit…chaotic, and I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here. Even so, Miller has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt and I’m eager to see how the full film plays out.

Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic – content with life and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she happens to encounter a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both.

Three Thousand Years of Longing hits theaters on August 31, 2022.
