JK Simmons to Reprise Commissioner Gordon Role for Batgirl

Looks like the upcoming Batgirl movie will have a familiar Gotham face, as J.K. Simmons will return as James Gordon.

Well this is pretty fun! J.K. Simmons always felt like a perfect pick for the role of Gotham Police Commissioner Gordon, and I was bummed to see him only get the one film to get a chance to play around with the role. Hell, the 2017 version of Justice League cut down his role significantly, but even his expanded role in the Snyder Cut wasn’t big.

According to a report from THR, we’ll get to see the actor reprise the role for the HBO Max Batgirl film. The news comes just a week after Leslie Grace (In the Heights) was announced to be playing the starring role of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. So it looks like things are coming together quickly for the live-action film.

No word on whether Simmons’ inclusion means there will be any other connections to that version of Gotham and the Justice League (was Batgirl inspired by Ben Affleck’s version of Batman in this continuity?), but I’m glad he’s getting another chance at the role.

Batgirl has no release date yet, but could be among the films planned for HBO Max in 2022.
