Live-Action TMNT: The Last Ronin Movie in the Works

The best-selling Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic (ever), The Last Ronin, is getting a live-action, R-rated movie!

Shell-heads have much to cheer about these days. On top of the new animated film, an upcoming series that will lead into a sequel, new comics on the horizon, and more video games inbound, today brings word of a new live-action film. Unlike the previous live-action TMNT films, this one will be for the older crowd as it will adapt The Last Ronin storyline and won’t be holding back on the action/killing.

So yeah, in addition to The Last Ronin having a new sequel series going on in comics, and an upcoming game adaptation, it’s now getting a movie. Considering how amazing the story is, however, it’s hard to complain.

I’m just thrilled we’re getting more TMNT live-action stuff! While I loved Mutant Mayhem, and eager to watch the new show, it’s a franchise that can definitely benefit from multiple genres for different ages. Since The Last Ronin takes place in an “alternate future” it instantly appeals to the older Turtles fans to begin with. Hell, it could even have some fun connections to the previous live-action films and almost be a legacy sequel.

I won’t spoil the comic, but if you haven’t read it yet, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Here’s the official description:

Who is the Last Ronin? In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost. From legendary TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, get ready for the final story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles three decades in the making! What terrible events destroyed his family and left New York a crumbling, post-apocalyptic nightmare? All will be revealed in this climactic Turtle tale that sees longtime friends becoming enemies and new allies emerging in the most unexpected places. Can the surviving Turtle triumph?

THR was the first to report the news, revealing that Tyler Burton Smith, who wrote the upcoming Boy Kills World movie, is handling the script with Walter Hamada producing. Paramount confirmed the news shortly after during their CinemaCon presentation.

No word yet on when we might see the movie, but The Last Ronin being in development for a movie is exciting enough at this point.
