Director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft, Mute) is tackling another new property for a film adaptation, this time wrangling the 2000 AD comic series Rogue Trooper in an animated movie bearing the same name. Producers Rebellion and Liberty Films have released a series of new images from the upcoming films to tantalize us until release.
These images primarily depict some of the prominent characters of the film, such as Aneurin Barnard (The Goldfinch, Dunkirk) in the role of 19, the titular Rogue Trooper. Jemaine Clement (Avatar 2: The Way of Water) and Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows) are also on display, both as their animated personas, Mr. Brass and Mr. Bland, as well as in some behind the scenes shots utilizing the cutting-edge Head Mounted Camera technology for ultimate facial capture fidelity.
Also on display are some more establishing shots, like a hulking war vehicle or the wandering soldiers seen in the featured image.
Rogue Trooper tells the tale of a “Genetic Infantryman,” the lone survivor of an invasion force who must track down the traitor responsible for the death of his battle brothers. He is accompanied by three of his squadmates who, despite being killed in action, have their personalities stored in his gun, helmet and backpack. The movie, produced by Stuart Fenegan and Jason and Chris Kingsley, also stars Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger), Jack Lowden (Dunkirk), Daryl McCormack (Bad Sisters), and Reece Shearsmith (Saltburn), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Earth), Alice Lowe (Black Mirror), Asa Butterfield (Sex Education) and Sean Bean(Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings).
The Rogue Trooper comic, first released by British publishers 2000 AD, was created by the legendary Dave Gibbons of Watchman and Kingsman fame on art, and writer Gerry Finley-Day (Dan Dare). 2000 AD is best known for being the home of the Judge Dredd series. This will not be Rebellion’s first attempt at popularizing the series since taking over publishing the magazine in (believe it or not) 2000. They also released a video game for sixth-generation consoles and PC in 2006 to middling sales and reviews, but maybe Jones has the sauce that was lacking twenty years ago!
There is no exact release date for Rogue Trooper yet, but it is scheduled to be released in cinemas sometime in 2025.
