Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Film Lands a Title and Release Date at Celebration

The opening panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan brought Shawn Levy to the stage to formally announce his new film, Star Wars: Starfighter.

This year’s Star Wars Celebration has officially started, and Lucasfilm kicked things off with The Mandalorian & Grogu panel. Despite the name, they began things off with a general look ahead as LFL President Kathleen Kennedy, and CCO Dave Filoni reassured fans that the previously announced films from James Mangold, Taika Waititi, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and a trilogy from Simon Kinberg are still in development.

Even better, however, they brought writer/director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) on stage to discuss his new film. There he confirmed Ryan Gosling would be starring in the film (bringing him on stage as well), while also revealing filming is set to begin this Fall.

If that wasn’t good enough, they closed out that segment of the panel by announcing both a title and release date for the film:

Star Wars: Starfighter,” which will be directed by Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling, is a standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.” The film, which will begin production this Fall, is an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.

Star Wars: Starfighter will hit theaters on May 28, 2027. This date is also important as it will mark Star Wars’ big 50th anniversary, so I suspect they’ll be trying to go all out that year to celebrate.
