The Joker Sequel is Moving Forward

This evening, director Todd Phillips took to social media to share an image of the Joker 2 script, revealing a possible title, and Joaquin Phoenix’s return.

After a lot of rumors, it looks like Warner Bros and Todd Phillips are definitely moving ahead with a sequel to Joker. The dark solo film was a big box office success when it hit in 2019, amassing over $1 billion off a $70-ish million budget. Not to mention awards attention and an Oscar for Joaquin! In short, a sequel seems like a no-brainer from a business standpoint.

Tonight brings a quick update from the director himself who posted a pair of images on his Instagram:

The first one is obviously a script (dated just last month) with a working title of Joker: Folie à Deux. The phrase refers to a mental disorder shared by TWO people, usually from the same family…So yeah, that’s interesting. Could be referring to the “Wayne” family connection that was part of the first film, or maybe something else entirely. Hard to say right now, but definitely gets the gears turning.

The second image is of Joaquin Phoenix, Joker himself, reading the script, confirming the actor is on board and ready to don the make-up once more. Not much to go on, but it’s at least confirmation that a sequel is in the works with a script in hand! What are you hoping to see out of Joker 2?
