A new film in The Mummy franchise is in the works, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in talks to return to their iconic roles!
How about this for a fun Tuesday surprise! It looks like Universal’s Mummy franchise is making a comeback and set to bring the O’Connells back once again as a legacy sequel. THR reports Fraser and Weisz are in talks to reprise the roles of Rick and Evelyn for an all new adventure.
Bringing this new sequel to life is Radio Silence, the directing team behind the more recent Scream revival (5 and 6) and Ready or Not. While details on the new story are still largely unknown, reports state this new film is set to ignore the events of the third Mummy film, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, in which Weisz did not return.
This legacy sequel is something that’s been whispered of on-and-off since Brendan Fraser’s, much deserved, renaissance began a few years back. Now, it looks like the pieces have finally fallen into place and fans can finally see these two back on the big screen together.
I couldn’t be more excited. Their original Mummy films remain a blast. I watched The Mummy on the big screen for its anniversary last year and it holds up incredibly well, largely due to the fun story and strong chemistry between these characters. Let’s hope that magic makes a return for this one.
Considering there’s a script already in place, from David Coggeshall, hopefully we’ll hear more about this sooner rather than later. I’m also very curious to see which other characters might be making a return.
