With the start of San Diego Comic-Con imminent, fans of Critical Role were treated to the first images from the upcoming series The Mighty Nein.
Ahead of the upcoming panels at San Diego Comic-Con where more reveals about Critical Role’s animated series have been teased, official still images from The Mighty Nein have been revealed, giving fans their first look at most of the upcoming misfit heroes.

From left to right we have: Nott the Brave (Sam Riegel), Caleb Widogast (Liam O’Brien), Beauregard Lionett (Marisha Ray), Jester Lavorre (Laura Bailey), Fjord Stone (Travis Willingham), and Mollymauk Tealeaf (Taliesin Jaffe). The only main character not visible in this picture is Yasha Nydoorin (Ashley Johnson) and hopefully we’ll get a look at her when the first trailer for the series is revealed.
The Mighty Nein is based on Critical Role’s legendary second campaign, which takes place close to two decades after the events of Campaign One, said events currently being animated in The Legend of Vox Machina. In contrast to TLOVM, which starts with the group already assembled, The Mighty Nein will show how the titular heroes come together, though in the case of these misfits the word “hero” should be used….loosely. The Mighty Nein are nothing like Vox Machina, which many argue adds to their charm. But I digress.

An unexpected surprise was also receiving the first official art for Essek Thelyss, an iconic NPC who has come to be beloved by the fans nearly as much as the main characters. As in the campaign, Essek will be voiced by Matthew Mercer and it’s already being teased that Essek’s story has been expanded for the animated series.
The Critical Role panels at SDCC are on Thursday, which hopefully means we’re only a few days away from getting a trailer for The Mighty Nein.
What do you think of this first look at The Mighty Nein?
