In a move that was likely predicted by absolutely no one, Ubisoft Film & Television have announced the next entry in their line of films based on video games in their catalog, teaming with film company Gaumont to bring the Riders Republic world to the big screen. The game, a massively multiplayer open-world romp featuring bikes, skis, snowboards, wingsuits and more, may pose an interesting challenge to adapt to film, but the companies appear to be taking this decision seriously in their choice of production talent.
Adil & Bilall, of Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die fame, have been tapped to helm the show as directors. Though perhaps not the most critically acclaimed movies, the latest Bad Boys films displayed a level of visual excitement and competence for action sequences that rival any other film on the market right now. The award winning writer Noé Debré (Stillwater, Parlement) will be penning the script, as well, making for an interesting combination of styles. If nothing else, Adil & Bilall’s flair for cinematography should be a good fit for showing off extreme sports in the flashy and impactful way they ought to be seen.
Riders Republic is admittedly one of the stranger choices for a live-action film treatment, but considering Ubisoft has had a Just Dance film in pre-production for going on six years now, maybe this one isn’t such a bad idea after all.
No release date has been set for Riders Republic so far, nor is there a trailer yet.
