Square Enix Focusing on Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 Over More DLC Says Nomura

Last month, the main event of Sony’s State of Play was the announcement of a PS5 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake, called Intergrade. Accompanying the PS5 version, as a separately-purchased DLC, was a story arc including everyone’s favorite Wutai ninja Yuffie Kisaragi. As it turns out, this new Yuffie DLC will be Final Fantasy VII Remake’s first and potentially only DLC.

In an interview with Famitsu (translation provided by VGC), Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Tetsuya Nomura stated that the development team is solely focused on developing Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2, with no plans to create any further story content.

“Due to the nature of the upgrade system, it resulted in us having to label the new Yuffie sections as ‘DLC’. However, the original intent was to create a PS5 version of FF7 Remake and not to produce DLC. Accordingly, we do not have any plans for DLC at this time,”

From his statement, it appears that the development team didn’t intend for the Yuffie DLC to be even considered DLC. Rather, part of the PS5 version of the game, although that’s purely conjecture on my part.

Nevertheless, Nomura also spoke on how the development team’s time porting the 2020 game to PS5 gave them great insight into developing Part 2.

“Sorting out the development environment on PS5 for FF7 Remake Intergrade, meant that moving on to developing the sequel was much smoother. We are now prioritizing the roadmap for completing the next game, so if we do need to think about more DLC then it will probably come after that is finished.”

Naoki Hamaguchi will be replacing Nomura as sole director of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2. Nomura will be taking a Creative Director position that overlooks all of the Final Fantasy VII projects, including the two mobile games announced. So he’s becoming a bit of creative overseer of the IP.

“It seems like I will be having a busy time for the foreseeable future, not just this year but next year and the year after that. This is only just the first announcement relating to FF7 and you can look forward to more information coming in the future. But first of all, look out for that release of FF7 Remake Intergrade on June 10.”
