Geek Pick of the Week: Star Wars Motivational Books

As the Holiday season approaches, we’re bringing back our Geek Pick of the Week. Each week leading up to Christmas, we’ll be highlighting a cool product we’ve found that we feel would be the perfect gift for geeks of all kinds. Use these to help fill in your own wish list or find the perfect gift for the nerds in your life.

DK already has a solid track record when it comes to books from the galaxy far, far away. Their Visual Guides and companion books for the film releases have offered some of the best, most detailed, information on the movies that fans crave. Earlier this month, they released a pair of new Star Wars books to do something a little different.

Be More Yoda and Be More Vader are smaller motivational/inspirational books along the lines of those pocket ‘bathroom readers.’ Instead of pulling quotes, however, these books offer up life lessons as seen from the films with insights on becoming more assertive and dealing with life’s problems.

The approach is not unlike other motivational books of this kind. Each presents a positive idea, or note of inspiration, and then utilizes character moments and events from the film as their examples. The result is a mix of in-universe (as if you were a Star Wars character) bits of wisdom/examples that have real world benefits. They’re pretty fun to read through and work well as books you can flip open to a random page and get something out of it. Leave them on your coffee table for guests to thumb through, or keep it in your desk for quick bursts of motivation throughout the day.

Personally, I enjoyed these little books even though the Be More Vader one feels a tad…out of place. It takes the same approach as Be More Yoda, but uses examples from the villains instead. The end result here are some ‘positive’ thoughts using examples that aren’t exactly positive in connotation. It’s a bit of a mixed message and considering the current cultural climate, may not be for the best.

Coming in under $10 each (Amazon has some good deals on them), these Star Wars books serve as excellent quick gifts or stocking stuffers.
