Arcade Classics’ latest release brings five classic Atari games to the counter-top arcade space, and we’re here to tell you all about our experience with it!
I’ve had the good fortune to review a number of arcades over the years, as the smaller-scale, more “consumer friendly” market has opened up thanks to companies like Arcade1Up. Arcade Classics (from Basic Fun!) has been around for a little while with a bunch of mini-handheld style arcades you’ve likely seen in stores that make for good stocking stuffers.
Over the past year, however, they’ve expanded into larger territory (even acquiring Arcade1Up late last year amid rumors of the company folding) with their own line of home arcades. Among those launched last Fall, was the Atari Tempest Counter Series cabinet…which they were kind enough to send my way to check out. With a bit more experience on these kind of cabinets, I was eager to see what these newcomers have prepped.
As you can see, the Atari Tempest cabinet isn’t bad, but there are some lessons the company can learn. I love how portable it is, and being able to pick it up (single-handed) to move it wherever I want to play, while keeping the arcade feel/gameplay, is a big bonus.
With them acquiring Arcade1Up, who’ve already solved the issues I had, I’m actually very excited to see where Arcade Classics goes from here. They’ve got the goods when it comes to presentation (the screen and overall cabinet are sleek), so if they can tighten up the controls and user interface, I think retro gaming fans have a lot to be excited for.
Arcade Classics – Atari Tempest Counter Series Game Machine is available now both in stores and online if you’re inclined to add this to your gaming room.
