Disney Dreamlight Valley released a new free update titled A Hero’s Journey and it does something different which pushes the game in the right direction.
I was excited to finally have Hercules in the game, and his arrival didn’t disappoint. The new content not only adds two new characters, but like normal it adds a new area to explore and missions to do to unlock the character for your valley.
The new missions unlock the last door for a new realm where you have to complete trials to unlock the new characters. And the last time I had this much fun in a realm was with Alice in Wonderland, but even that was mostly about the aesthetic feel of the realm itself. Hercules’ realm instead adds something new in having challenges where you have to use your tools and wit to “quickly” complete challenges.
Zeus, while not in the game itself, gives you some powers to assist which further strengthen the aesthetic feel as you feel more powerful than ever, but the world itself is just like it was taken from the movie itself. Seeing the statue fists and the same training grounds Herc roamed about in the movies was so fun to see and complete. It put the game on a whole different level than simple find and return requests other realms put you through.
While the free content is short, like usual, I felt it was a good step in the right direction. If the game offered more content updates that added twists to utilizing all your tools, or created new ways to play, it’d be something exciting for me every time. Dreamlight Valley clearly nails the aesthetic feel down for all the characters and their stories, but to me the fetch quests got a bit repetitive and somewhat ruined otherwise great concepts. So much so that I didn’t always finish them right away, while this update went by fast!
It also helps that it appears Hercules is also bringing with him one of the best content updates to date. The season is filled with unlocks where I saw I wanted almost every selection on every page, and the store has a bunch of bundles taking all my moonstones. Though I’m a bit disappointed that I haven’t seen the iconic Air Hercs added anywhere, yet.
