Dragon Quest XII Delay, Name Change, Gameplay Trailer Revealed on Dragon Quest Day 2026

Happy Dragon Quest Day! Square Enix is celebrating 40 years TODAY of one of its most iconic franchises with a 10 minute video featuring a lot of nostalgia alongside huge news around Dragon Quest XII. 

Yuji Horii, game designer, and Yosuke Saito, executive producer, spoke at length in the livestream where they revealed that “we decided to move things around and start over from scratch.”

The pair said that “reshuffle of the team” alongside the development restart means that “it’s going to be a bit longer till it’s in your hands.” No date or release window was given.

The game also underwent a title change, from Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate to Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. Alongside this change, the game’s logo has also been completely refreshed,” the studio said in the description of the livestream, which also included a look at in-development footage.

We also got an official announcement for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World will release on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The team at Square Enix also revealed that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition will release on the Nintendo Switch on September 24. The Definitive Edition includes new story chapters, more Japanese and English voices, the ability to switch between 3D and 2D mode, new optimizations, and more.
