Valve’s Steam Deck Price Hike Continues Console Cost Woes

Valve’s Steam Deck is the latest console to get a price hike as hardware costs continue to rise in 2026. The move comes as every major console developer has increased costs over the last six months citing some version of “current economic conditions.”

Wario64 highlighted the price increase for the two OLED models of the Steamdeck on May 27. The 512GB model price increased from $549 to $749, and the 1TB model from $649 to $949.

Starting September 1, Nintendo will raise the prices on the Nintendo Switch consoles by $50 from $449 to $499 for US customers. Nintendo made the announcement on May 8 attributing the increase to “changes in market conditions,” and highlighted price increases for Canada, Europe, and Japan as well.

In March, Sony revealed price changes for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PlayStation Portals that began in April, pushing prices up to $599 for the PS5 Digital Edition, $649 for the PS5, $899 for the PS5 Pro, and $249 PS Portal.

Sony also increased the price on May 20 for PlayStation Plus citing “ongoing market conditions.” Options start at $10.99 for 1-month subscriptions, up from $9.99, and $27.99 for 3-month subscriptions, up from $24.99.

Microsoft announced price hikes on Xbox consoles at the end of 2025. PlayStation’s 2026 price increase mirrors Microsoft’s options with the Xbox Series X 1TB console with a disc drive running $649 and $599 for the All-Digital. The 2TB Xbox Series X with the disc drive costs $799.

Microsoft cited the price changes “due to changes in the macroeconomic environment” when it was first announced in September 2025.
