James Mangold and Dave Filoni Directing New Star Wars Films

During Star Wars Celebration Europe’s opening panel, Kathleen Kennedy revealed both James Mangold and Dave Filoni as directors for upcoming Star Wars films!

After a lot of rumors, back and forths and outright missing a planned movie release date, today brought eager Star Wars fans an update on the theatrical side of the galaxy far, far away. Not one, but THREE films were announced as being in the works, which will span different eras across the Star Wars timeline.

I’ve already discussed the other one, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy which will bring Daisy Ridley back as Rey, but now let’s talk about the other two!

James Mangold is staying in the Lucasfilm family after Indiana Jones and will be directing a film about the first Jedi. Described as a “Biblical Epic” the film will focus on the dawn of the Jedi and take fans far back on the timeline! Personally speaking, I’m more than ready to see more stuff outside of the main Skywalker Saga timeline. The High Republic has been amazing so far, and I have high hopes for this one.

On top of that, Dave Filoni is finally getting his own movie! His movie will be centered on the New Republic era and will “close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series.” We knew they were building to something, so it’s neat to see they’ll be wrapping it up on the big screen. Considering we just saw Thrawn in the Ahsoka trailer, I’m sure we can assume who will be the villain in the movie.

No time frames were given for when we might see these movies (though I’m assuming the Rey Jedi Academy one will be the December 2025 film already slated), but let’s cross those fingers these ones actually see the light of day.
