‘Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey Cast as Ellie in ‘The Last of Us’ HBO Series

[UPDATE: Adding in the casting of Pedro Pascal as Joel. The original article remains as follows:]

HBO, Sony Pictures, and PlayStation Productions have found their Ellie. Bella Ramsey, best known for her portrayal of Lyanna Mormont in HBO’s Game of Thrones, has been cast as the lead in the upcoming The Last of Us series adaptation.

This will be Ramsey’s third show on the premium cable channel. She made quite the splash in her HBO debut on Game of Thrones. Most recently, she played a recurring character in Season 2 of another HBO show, His Dark Materials. Now, Ramsey will be taking her talents to the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us as one of the two lead characters.

The Last of Us takes place 20 years in the future, in a world where humanity was brought to its knees after a deadly outbreak infected the mass majority of the population, turning them into horrific monsters. Joel, a smuggler, is given the task of escorting a 14-year old orphan girl, Ellie, to a group known as the Fireflies.

The role of Joel will be played by Pedro Pascal.

The Last of Us HBO series is being written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin. He’ll also be executive producer alongside the writer and creative director of the game, Naughty Dog‘s Neil Druckmann.

Back in November, HBO gave The Last of Us a full series order. No word yet on when that series will premiere.

Stay tuned.
