Sony Raising PS Plus Prices With Massive Increase

Sony announced that PS Plus prices will increase substantially next week, and it’s not good.

Sony announced prices will be increases as much as 33 percent in a new round of price increases for the subscription service. Current prices range from $59 to $119 in three tiers, but the new plans will mean the entry price rises to $79.

Essentials will go from $59 to $79.
Extra will go from $99 to $134
Premium will go from $119 to $159

Sony stated on the PlayStation Blog “This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.”

Sony notes that this is the “discounted rate” as well, being they are 12 month subscriptions. Which means the one month and 3 month tiers will see substantial increases as well. Sony also notes that the price increase won’t take effect until your subscription expires or renews after September 6th, so you might have an opportunity to rush out and secure the current price.

It was pretty sneaky to not really announce the price increase by itself, and instead tag it on the next month monthly release lineup. Also giving people very little time to run and extend their subscriptions seems sketch too. And that line up by the way, is lackluster like usual. We had one decent month last month, but what has PS Plus added to provide additional value for the price? Well PS5 has had some very basic features, like transferring your save to another console, locked out unless you pay….. or the fact backwards compatible titles are still locked to the highest tier of the service, and can only be streamed…. so I guess we have that.

PS Plus has a lot of ground to make up with a certain other competing service to warrant the price, but until then I’ll personally be letting my subscription lapse or downgrade to the basic tier until there is value added to warrant this huge price increase. What do you think about the abrupt price increase?
