SPUD Puts a Portable, Pop-Up Monitor in Your Hand

We’ve featured a number of display monitors here on the site, but this is easily among the coolest.  SPUD is currently up on Kickstarter, but don’t let that scare you off, as the project has already blasted past its funding goal.  It was in the $40,000 region when I started this article, and at the time of posting, is already in the $60,000 neighborhood.  So it’s going to happen, you just have to decide if this nifty gadget is a good fit for you:

SPUD is the only high resolution, 24-inch display with the awesome benefit of ultra-portability. It collapses just like a ruggedized umbrella to the size and weight of a paperback book – making it ideal for anyone on the go. When expanded, SPUD uses custom optics combined with the latest DLP technology to produce the sharp, bright image that you need. Either with an HDMI cable or wireless adapter, SPUD can be connected to a smartphone, tablet, or laptop – no matter where you are!

From watching movies on the go to being more productive while away from your office, SPUD optimizes the visual experience on practically any device. SPUD pops-up to a huge, 24-inch diagonal display. When fully expanded, the device is 21 inches wide, 11 inches high, 14 inches deep (61 cm diagonal, 53 cm wide, 28 cm high, 36 cm deep).

The 24-inch display is the size of a large desk monitor, with almost 4x more screen area than a 13-inch laptop screen, and 23x more screen area than a 5.1-inch smartphone! The screen is also highly durable. Unlike breakable glass screens, SPUD uses a flexible polymer that can’t get cracked or chipped. If you happen to get it dirty, it’s washable. Further, the attached casing keeps your SPUD protected as you take it wherever life takes you.

When SPUD is collapsed, it’s about the size of a book: 5.64 inches wide, 2.17 inches high, 7.52 inches long (17 cm wide, 5.5 cm high, 19 cm long). Because of SPUD’s lightweight (less than 2 pounds) and compact form factor, when collapsed, it fits in your purse, backpack, laptop bag, or even your jacket pockets! Take SPUD anywhere!

Whether you’re traveling, camping, hanging out with friends at a coffee shop, or just lounging around your house, it’s the big screen you can use anywhere.

For work, having a dual-screen setup is great for productivity, but you can also use it for presentations and as a collaboration tool. It’s great for trade shows, sales visits, or any kind of field work.

SPUD combines a projector and projector screen into a complete, easy-to-use system. Unlike a traditional projector, SPUD does not need dim lighting, a wall, or a long projection distance. With our innovations, you can use your SPUD anywhere, with confidence. Three patent-pending innovations make this possible:

unnamed 1

The Projection Screen

SPUD uses the only projection screen designed to fully collapse. The screen material has been carefully crafted by our team to optimize image quality while minimizing screen wrinkles.

The Collapsible Design

The arms “pop-up” like a ruggedized umbrella, making setup a one-step process. The cover over the arms blocks out ambient light and helps to maximize brightness and contrast.

The Custom Optics

The optical design enables SPUD to project a high quality image over a much shorter distance than a standard projector.

When you want wireless (e.g. Chromecast, Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, Fire TV Stick, Roku Stick), just plug your wireless adapter’s HDMI port into the SPUD HDMI port and the power for the adapter into SPUD’s USB port. No wires needed to stream your favorite content!
